Stefan Zahariev mentioned the Asclepiy Zemidrensky’s Sanctuary
in the ages before the Liberation. Dimitar Tzonchev and Konstantin Hristovich explored in details the sanctuary in 1939. It was a square hall 19x19 meters. The walls were built with bricks and stone. The hall was covered with wood construction, which was propped up against the walls of the inner strut. There had been a sacred spring known as Asclepiy’s sanctuary. During the archeological works they found 42 ritual tablets of Trachian Heros, statuettes, a sacrificial altar, many coins. The fact that the inscriptions are in ancient Greek, not in Latin, surprised us (in this period Trakya was a Roman province).
The sanctuary was built in the second half of 2nd century and had been working by the end of 4th century when it was burnt. In the temple there are bones of various animals – sheep, buffaloes, deer, which probably were offered as a sacrifice to Asclepiy God. Archeological finds from the sanctuary are kept in Plovdiv and Pazardjik museums.
The secondary Asclepiy’s sanctuary was in the village of Varvara. In ritual Thracian horse-rider’s tablet which was built in southwest wall of the church in Varvara was brought from this sanctuary or from Batkun. The local people respect this plaque as a St George’s icon and this is an eloquent fact that confirms the overflow from the cult to Asclepiy to the cult to this famous Christian holy man. |
