About Patalenitza

Water and soil

Near Patalenitza and particularly Batkun there are several small rivers and a spring. In the past the rivers used to be deeper and were used to water the near fields and gardens. The Selska River and the Ermianska River are of the greatest importance. The Ermyanska River is also known as "Polovin reka – Half River". The legend says that during the Ottoman occupation the people of Batkun used the water by day and the people of Patalenitza at night. This river used to be a border between Patalenitza and Batkun. Today the river level is lower because of the unsustainable ecological situation – deforestation, water diversion, etc.
In the forests above the village there is brown forest soil, in Patalenitza – maroon and in the area near Batkun – swampy soil.
