Problems with communication, anti drug and sexual education

A life full of human responsiveness and goodness – there is not a human being that does not desire this. If we want to do this, we have to learn some definite skills, to change our minds from old to new adjustments, to go out from our little world and to help children do the same. And we started. In the school year 1999-2000, in "K. Velichkov" Primary school, we organized a project: "Children Social Service", financed by "Open Society" Foundation – Sofia. The members of the group, formed for social service, several times a month opened the doors of some lonely old people from Patalenitza, Old People’s Home in Pazardjik, and Disabled children’s home. They simply talked about the daily events, painted, sang. The "Sprinkles" Vocal Group /teacher T. Stoianova/ performed special songs for children’s new friends.

group was carried out of the school, in the building of a given institution:The Police – Pazardjik, pedagogical children room, Bulgarian Red Cross, Psychiatrist Hospital, the prison in Pazardjik. The lessons were quite different from the ordinary ones. The topics were actual – "Hard and soft drug", "A family drama with continuation", "The minor offender", "How can we overcome the vocation for the allurement of the streets?" etc. The specialists from the specific institutions carried out the lessons. The children told what they had learnt in the open lessons to their classmates and as a result the group called "SOS patrol" expanded. An idea came from this group – to play various situations in front of the little pupils. The main goal is – to learn necessary skills for the right reaction.

We were the first involved in the program of "Gender project in Bulgaria" Foundation – Sofia. The topics, discussed with the children attracted with their variety and actuality: The basic human rights; the problems of the women all over the world; The violence as a world problem; Violence in the contemporary society in Bulgaria; The rape – myth and reality… Various forms are applied for discussing and self-expressing – discussions, playing roles, tests. The pupils learned some practical skills for self-dependent coping with problems related to aggression in the school and outside. Education of the children from VI class in "AIDS prevention" programme

Beginning of December 2000, the National television had been making for two days a documentary devoted to sexual equality problems.
In March 2001 we defended a project "Prevention against violence over children in village conditions" It was financed by the Canadian fund for local initiatives of the Canadian embassy. Its program is a continuation of the Gender education and it is directed towards children, parents and teachers. Its goal is nurturing defense reflexes of the children in various risk situations. A partnership with "Animus" Foundation in Plovdiv and "Animus" Association in Sofia was realized. We prepared brochures for children, parents and teachers, which were received with a great interest.
In next 2002 and 2003 we were working jointly with psychologists who visited the children regularly. The main topics were distributed in the following directions: communication problems, anti drug, and sexual education,
At the beginning of the 2004/2005 school year we are going to start work in "AIDS prevention and control in Bulgaria" (financed by the AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria Global Fund). The 7th component says: "Restraining the risk behaviour among growing up young people". Two teachers from the school did a ten-day course in this program.
