"Patalenitza and Batkun – familiar and unfamiliar"
² Development of the idea:
Before the project to be prepared, the initiators from the school board had a lot of meetings and discussions with the villagers. Different ideas were discussed: a restoration of "St Dimitar" church, to resume the traditional celebration of the St George’s day, to build new chapels, to save old houses in the village, to help local craftsmen, to collect old national costumes.

The project idea "Patalenitza and Batkun – familiar and unfamiliar" has been approved because it gets together the unique past and future. It is important to the community because the residents of Patalenitza /particularly the youths/ do not know very well the place where they live. The region of Patalenitza – Batkun has a lot of sights. But people often ignore them. The youths do not know them very well. The renewal of the memory for a glorious historical past will unite people and make them collaborate and give them a chance for more mutual activities as well. It will strengthen their spirit and reveal new alternatives for them to make their living.
The villagers are very proud of their past. But is it enough? Do we keep our heritage?

Do we teach our children to keep and develop it? Can we use this heritage in a profitable way? Our project tries to answer these questions.
I² Main goal of the project:
A revival of the community identity on the base is the local historical and cultural heritage of Patalenitza by creating a workshop for history, theatre and folklore.
III Activities:
The main points are:
1. To prepare and open a full historical collection telling about Patalenitza – Batkun. This collection will include materials about people’s lifestyle and the most interesting historical and cultural treasures in the area (Kaleto and Batkun strongholds, "St Dimitar" church from 12th century, Batkun monastery, Asclepiy’s sanctuary, "St Peter and Pavel" monastery).

There will be an ethnographical workshop and a shop. The idea is the villagers (children and adults) to make various exhibits, visitors consequently will buy that. In April 2004 we arranged an exhibition of this workshop in Plovdiv ethnographical museum which had a great success.
2. It is very important to make the unique historical and cultural heritage of Patalenitza popular. So we have stipulated a huge advertising campaign that includes:
a) Making an Internet page;
b) Printing brochures offering tourist routes and services;
c) Shooting an advertising film;
Tourist route will be described and developed. Children and adults will be taught to become tourist guides. Visits to other places providing country tourism are planned to be held.
