Sights in the region of Patalenitza – Batkun

"The Virgin Mary" church in the village of Batkun

There were three chapels in Batkun – "St Trinity", "St. Petka" and "St George". In the beginning of the 9th century the residents of Batkun built a small church "St Virgin Mary" which today does not exist. Only the "St. Virgin Mary" Church is preserved now. It was built in 1892 on the place of the old chapel after the Liberation. That’s why the church in Batkun is not dug in the ground. The church is one-nave, high, with a balcony in its west part. The iconostasis is wooden, without woodcarving, with 2 lines of icons. The icons are mainly from 19th century. Filip Todorov Izografski painted some of them in 1892. There were donor’s inscriptions on some icons.
The following fact is very interesting. The church was founded in 1892 but all liturgical books are older. For example the Gospel was made in 1805. Therefore all liturgical literature was brought from somewhere, probably from "St. St. Peter and Pavel" Monastery.
