The settlement of Patalenitza-Batkun is rich in ruins, that is a proof of intensive life at the time of Romans and Thracians. It is thought that the village of Patalenitza was founded in the Middle Ages between the height Tepeto and the stronghold Kaleto that is1.2 km far away from it. "We do not know exactly what happened to the village and the stronghold during Turkish invasion. We can suggest that they were devastated and the village moved from half to 1 km. in the north – on its present location and with the same name. This is the present village Patalenitza" (Professor Ivan Batakliev, "Pazardjik and the region").
The settlement of Batkun is rich in ruins left by Thracians and Romans. According to a
sign (IV BC)we can suggest that Batkun was a settlement with the same order as Greek towns. There was a temple of God Apolon. This village might have been founded at the time of Philip II Makedonsky. In the Middle Ages Batkun used to be the biggest town – stronghold in the area of Pazardjik. It was a district centre and a residence of metropolitan. After the town of Pazardjik had been founded in 1485 Batkun lost its glory gradually and became a small village at the beginning of 19th century.
The origin of the name Patalenitza is still a controversial question. On a map by Ptolomey of the Kassandra Peninsula (Halkida at present) there is a settlement called Patalanes.
His Holiness Patriarch Kiril wrote that by the Island Lake in Macedonia there was the village of Patele where Plovdiv metropolitan Panaret came from. This settlement was named after the near "St Panteleymon" Monastery. In 18th century the people from the village of Patele moved to present Patalenitza. Another opinion is that in the Middle Ages Patalenitza was named after "St Panteleymon" church. It was called Patalenitza by the Bulgarian people during Turkish yoke, but in the registers it was written Patalendja.
It is difficult to explain the origin of the name Batkun. It is thought that the word is of
